How many people can one Manager-Once-Removed actually carry?

Set the time budget below, then drag the Direct Manager count to see where coaching time runs out, and how big the resulting Managerial Kept Unit (MKU) gets.

The unit, drawn to scale

One MoR, the Direct Managers below them, and the subordinates each DM can coach within the time available.

Manager Once Removed Direct Manager DM over capacity Subordinate (SoR)

Time budget

25 inputs, same as the original workbook's Inputs tab. Everything below recalculates live.

Allocated time Base

MoR: meetings & coaching MoR

DM: meetings & coaching DM

25. Direct Manager count

How many DMs report to this one MoR. Drag to test the range from 1 to 10.

5

At 5 Direct Managers

Capacity holds: the MoR has enough coaching time left over for every subordinate these DMs can cover.

Rows follow the original workbook's calculation order (steps 10–17). "Err" appears when the average subordinate count per DM would fall below one (i.e. there isn't enough work to justify that many Direct Managers at this DM count).

What does this number mean for your structure?

Send me what you calculated and I will give you my read on it: whether the figure looks right for your setup, and what I would check first. No charge, no obligation.

Your answers in the tool above are not sent anywhere. The scoring happens entirely in your browser and nothing leaves this page. This form is separate: it sends only what you type into it, to Nagib Choueiri, and is used for nothing else.
